Biography.

Sumedha Sharma is a vocalist, songwriter, audio engineer, and music educator from New Delhi. Her sound is influenced by modern pop, R&B, acoustic and ballad music. She has been an ardent music practitioner since the age of sixteen. With almost a decade of experience in the music industry, Sumedha has established herself as a versatile music professional, utilising herself in diverse outfits across music education, creation, engineering, and performance.

Sumedha is from the city of Jaipur where she grew up, but completed her higher secondary education from New Delhi. During this time, she enrolled herself in the Bridge Music Academy where she formally completed her Grade 8 in RockSchool Vocals. She was awarded as the 'North-India region Topper' in Rockschool Grade 6 Vocals and performed at the Toppers' concert in 2015. As a performing artist, she has performed various shows with bands, duos, and solo setups at venues including but not limited to The Piano Man Jazz Club, Alliance Francaise, India Habitat Center, IIT Delhi, Radio One 93.4, and CyberHub Gurugram. With over ten years of training, Sumedha has truly begun to hone her craft as a vocalist, performer, and songwriter.

Sumedha pursued an undergraduate degree in Liberal Arts and Humanities. In her fifth semester, she went for a semester aboard program at the International College of Liberal Arts in Kofu, Japan. In this semester her emphasis of study was music. With courses such as 'Music and Creativity - Methods of Songwriting and Composition', 'Introduction to Music Technology and Synthesis', and 'Fundamentals of Acoustics, Human Hearing and Sound', she further developed an interest in audio technology and music production.

This led her to pursue an Audio Engineering and Music Production Diploma at the audio school of Sri Aurobindo Centre of Arts and Communication headed by Gaurav Chintamani. Having a repertoire of recording, production, mixing, live sound, film sound, sonic arts, and mastering across the course, Sumedha hand-picked the creative side of music technology as reflected in her work.

She began her practice in audio as an assistant audio engineer at the RRE Studios, Faridabad where she assisted the Chief  Audio Engineer and worked with artists such as Kutle Khan and Sunanda Sharma. After a brief period at RRE, she continued freelancing as a recording engineer at Squarewave Studios, performing artist, and a music producer with TV Island.

Sumedha began teaching western vocals at the Bridge Music Academy and as a private instructor early in her career. She teaches across beginner, intermediate, and advance level students. Having an emphasis on three key areas of learning - technique, practice, and performance, she follows a student-centered method of instruction in her teaching. She believes that it is fundamental to offer her students the space and time to grow at their own pace while ensuring regular practice of the instrument to develop muscle memory. Engaging her students in fun vocal warm-up exercises that encourage picking mundane things from one's everyday speech behaviours and using them as a way to exercise the fundamentals of vocalisation not only make her lessons more active and enthralling but also teach the students to be mindful and grateful for the little things in life. For example, a lesson in registration and resonance would be assisted by verbalising different emotions and reminding the learner how these are already a part of human speech. As this is established, it becomes the starting point of identifying and exercising across their respective ranges.

In 2022, she became a part of the Global Music Institute as a Western Vocals and Western Music Foundation Faculty at their partner Dr. B.R. Ambedkar School of Specialised Excellence by the Delhi Government. Under this engagement, she has also worked as a music-core evaluator with the Delhi Board of School Education for Grade 10 Board examinations. In 2023, Sumedha joined the True School of Music, Vijaybhoomi University as an Assistant Professor where she taught across various departments including vocals, music theory, ear training, and sound engineering.

Sumedha also designed and recorded over 10 lessons in singing techniques as a part of the 'Unlu Singing Fellowship' program with 'Mugafi', an online ed-tech platform that offers live classes and fellowships with industry stalwarts across various fields such as acting, music and writing.

Teaching is not only Sumedha's strength but also her path to building a career in the music education space. Sumedha is an effective communicator, an observant listener, an inquisitive learner, and a critical thinker which allows her to excel in mentoring. She believes that teaching is a reciprocal process where an equal amount of learning happens between the teacher and the student.

As a songwriter, Sumedha has written over 15 original songs which she passionately performs at her gigs. Her debut EP 'Last Love Song' is in the making where she is writing, producing, arranging music for her compositions. Her writing is influenced by contemporary artists such as Adele, Gracie Abrams, Maro, and Lizzy McAlpine. Her compositions reflect a sense of nostalgia and reminiscence over past relationships and events and a spirit to overcome these. She has also written songs based on social causes such as 'Crazy Love', a song on domestic violence survivors during her internship with NGO Commotion India, 'Kintsugi' a song about suicide prevention during her time in Japan and 'Girl', a song expressing the zeal to break out of patriarchal barriers which she also performed at Commotion India's 'I AM' event in 2018.

Looking to the future, Sumedha is not only gearing up for the release of her debut EP, but also introducing her voice school called the 'Songbird School of Voice'.

With her diverse skill-set and a liberal mindset, Sumedha is prepared to network and collaborate across creative spaces in the music industry. Whether she's performing live, teaching students, or producing music, she brings a unique perspective and a contagious passion to everything she does.
